3. Language Pair Selection
Select
Language Pair from the
Settings menu to choose the language pair of the translator (Fig. 3).
It can be either
English->Finnish or
Finnish->English depending on the user rights.
It is recommended to choose
Auto-Selection because then the translator automatically selects the language pair based on the source text.
However, sometimes the correct language pair cannot be determined automatically. In this case the user has to select the language pair.

4. Translation Settings
By clicking the
Dictionaries button

and choosing
Select Dictionaries you can open a dialog for selecting special dictionaries and translation settings.
Selecting correct dictionaries can improve the translation's quality.
The translator contains ready-made special dictionaries such as
Business and
Information Technology.
You can change the following
English-Finnish translation settings (Fig. 4):
- Default 'you' person translation: Choose whether the default Finnish translation of 'you' is 'sinä' or 'te'.
- Treat words starting with upper case always as proper nouns:
If this option is selected, the translator always tries to treat words starting with upper case as proper nouns
and thus leaves them untranslated.
- Mark unknown words with '?': If this option is selected, the translator adds a question mark to the end of words whose translation is unknown.
- Show dictionary results: If this option is selected, the program shows alternative translations for a single word if available.
You can change the following
Finnish-English translation settings (Fig. 5):
- Target language: Choose whether the target language is British English or American English.

Fig. 6. Dictionary editor main window
In the
Edit Word window (Fig. 7) you can set a new translation equivalent for the given source word.
In English-Finnish dictionaries you can also define linguistic attributes such as syntactic category and inflection.
Choosing correct linguistic attributes helps the translator to make fluent translations.
Click the
"Show advanced options" button to see all linguistic attributes available for editing.
In Finnish-English dictionaries the syntactic category is always noun.
Enter the source word and its translation equivalent in
base form without infections, articles or prepositions.
In English-Finnish dictionaries the source word can be a compound word (like "web site -> web-sivusto").
However, in Finnish-English dictionaries the source word can consist of only one Finnish word.
In addition, only words that the translator recognizes as Finnish can be added to Finnish-English dictionaries.
If the dictionary type is
"full sentences", use the Edit Sentence window to give a translation for a full sentence.
You can use "wildcard" markings @Noun or @Adj in place of a single word in the sentence (English->Finnish only).
@Noun means that any noun is accepted (e.g. This is a @Noun -> Tämä on @Noun). @Adj means that any adjective is accepted.
