1. Translating Web Pages

Click the Translate button on the Sunda Web toolbar to translate the web page you are currently viewing (Fig. 1). Alternatively, you can select "Translate page with Sunda Web" from the context menu of your web browser. The formatting of the web page is retained during the translation. If you have selected a text section on the web page, only that section will be translated.

Texts inside pictures, videos or animations are not translated. In addition, text content generated by browser scripts or inside HTML frames may not be translated.

2. Translating Text Sections

If you want to translate a certain text section on a web page, select the text section and click the Translate button or select "Translate with Sunda Web" from the context menu that opens by clicking the right mouse button (Fig. 2). If you have selected a single word, the translator shows alternative translations for that word if possible. This dictionary feature is available only in the English-to-Finnish translator.

3. Language Pair Selection

Select Language Pair in the settings menu to choose the language pair of the translator (Fig. 3). It can be either English->Finnish or Finnish->English depending on the user rights. It is recommended to choose Auto-Selection because then the translator automatically selects the language pair based on the source text. However, sometimes the correct language pair cannot be determined automatically. In this case the user has to select the language pair.

4. Quick Translation Mode

  (Internet Explorer version only)

The quick translation mode allows you to translate a sentence on a web page by clicking one word of the sentence.

You can activate this feature by choosing "Enable Quick Translation" in the Settings menu (Fig. 4).

If you are viewing a secure web page (https), the quick translation mode does not function.

In the quick translation mode the translation result is shown in a window which contains both the original and the translated sentence (Fig. 4). The result window can be closed by clicking it.

6. Editing User Dictionaries

Click the Dictionaries button on the Sunda Web toolbar and choose Edit Dictionaries to open an editor for managing your own dictionaries (Fig. 8).

To create a new dictionary, click the Create Dictionary button or select File->Create Dictionary from the editor top menu. Dictionary name must not contain white spaces or special characters. The language pair of a dictionary can be either English->Finnish or Finnish->English. If the dictionary type is set to "full sentences", the dictionary is used to modify translations of full sentences.

Use the Dictionary pulldown to choose which user dictionary is active in the editor. The Language pulldown defines the language pair whose dictionaries are shown in the Dictionary pulldown. To use the selected dictionary in translations, check the Use dictionary checkbox. You can also select user dictionaries in the Translation Settings dialog in the same way as ready-made special dictionaries.

You can add a new word to the selected dictionary by clicking the Add Word button . Alternatively, click the dictionary table with the right mouse button and choose Add Word. You can also add words directly from the current web page by clicking the Dictionaries button on the Sunda Web toolbar and choosing Add Word. If you have selected a word in the web page, it will be set automatically as the source word.

To edit an existing word, double-click the word on the dictionary table. Alternatively, you can first select the word and then click the Edit Word button .

To remove a word, click it with the right mouse button and choose Delete Word.

Changes made to a dictionary are saved to the translator only after you click the Save Changes button .

Select File->Export Dictionary from the top menu if you want to save the dictionary to an XML or CSV file. This allows you to share the dictionary with other users or to edit it using an external text editor. Select File->Import Dictionary to load a dictionary file into the editor.

You can look for words in the dictionary by clicking the Find button .

Fig. 8. Dictionary editor main window

In the Edit Word window (Fig. 9) you can set a new translation equivalent for the given source word. In English-Finnish dictionaries you can also define linguistic attributes such as syntactic category and inflection. Choosing correct linguistic attributes helps the translator to make fluent translations. Click the "Show advanced options" button to see all linguistic attributes available for editing. In Finnish-English dictionaries the syntactic category is always noun.

Enter the source word and its translation equivalent in base form without infections, articles or prepositions. In English-Finnish dictionaries the source word can be a compound word (like "web site -> web-sivusto"). However, in Finnish-English dictionaries the source word can consist of only one Finnish word. In addition, only words that the translator recognizes as Finnish can be added to Finnish-English dictionaries.

If the dictionary type is "full sentences", use the Edit Sentence window to give a translation for a full sentence. You can use "wildcard" markings @Noun or @Adj in place of a single word in the sentence (English->Finnish only). @Noun means that any noun is accepted (e.g. This is a @Noun -> Tämä on @Noun). @Adj means that any adjective is accepted.
